This magnificent set of engraved, 24 carat gold inlaid percussion pistols are an
extremely rare, one of a kind pair with a marvelous provenance. The maker,
"Adolphe Jansen" Brussels, Belgium, worked circa: 1840-1854. His gun making
art was displayed in the International Exposition in London, England in the year
1851. Jansen was considered one of the finest engravers of his era. Jansen's
exhibit included this very pair of high art pistols as described in Colonel Robert
Gardener's book "Small Arms Makers", page 274, under "Adolphe Jansen". As
detailed in that reference, engraved on the fluted barrels in gold the words:
"Ad. Janens Arq~er. Du Roi Bruxelles", (Gun maker to the King of Belgium).
The engraved stocks are of solid ebony and the condition of both pistols,
engraved number "1 & "2" are in absolutely unaltered, original condition with
the original gold inlays as beautiful as the day the artesian did the work, prior to
1851, circa: 1848. This fine set has been in storage since 1979 and discovered
in the estate in 2007. A cased pair of Adolphe Jansen pistols of similar style,
without any gold inlays and extensive engraving were sold at a London auction in
1991. It is indeed rare to find a pair of antique arms of this quality, still together
and remaining in such beautiful, original condition.
